The ImagineArts course

Flourish Through the Arts.

Evidence-based practices for a richer life through the eight arts. A foundation module teaches how the arts feed a life; each art then opens as its own door. Start with the art you love, or the one you always wished you understood.

How every practice works

Learn a little. Do it. See it add up.

1

Learn

A short lesson on what the research found, in plain language, with its strength stated honestly.

2

Practise

A guided encounter you complete in minutes: a painting, a poem, a piece of music, a film, a memory.

3

Keep

Your entries are saved, so you can return to them and watch your own record grow.

Module by module

One foundation. Eight doors.

Begin with the foundation, then take the arts in any order. Nothing is locked by week; each module carries its own Foundation Notes and a sheet of free open doors.

🌟 The Imaginative Life

The foundation: what the arts do for a life and how. The awe micro-skill (attend, slow down, expand), the savouring frame (anticipate, immerse, reminisce), and your personal mechanism profile — the five ingredients every good activity feeds. Everything the eight art modules build on.

3 practices: The Awe Compass, The Savouring Frame, My Mechanisms.

1

📚 Literature & Poetry

Words as a wellbeing practice: the best-evidenced writing exercise in positive psychology (your Best Possible Self), a positively-tuned journal, one poem properly met in any language your heart speaks, and a reading log built around a single unusual question — whose eyes did you live behind today?

4 practices: My Best Possible Self, The Bright Pages, The Poem Encounter, A Reading Life. About the art →

2

🎨 Visual Arts

Learning to really look: the staged fifteen-minute encounter with one great artwork (senses, feelings, meaning), the beauty hunt with a camera and a caption, and the daily two-minute gallery — the coffee-break version of the museum.

3 practices: The Fifteen-Minute Masterpiece, The Beauty Hunt, The Two-Minute Gallery. About the art →

3

🧠 Philosophy

Thinking as a wellbeing practice: the third-person Wisdom Diary shown in randomized trials to grow wise reasoning, the Stoics’ view from above running on modern distancing science, and the oldest move in practical philosophy — separating what happened from what you added to it.

3 practices: The Wisdom Diary, The View From Above, The Reframe. About the art →

4

🎵 Music

Listening as an art of its own: navigate your moods with a three-track journey, learn the four modes of deep listening — and then get into a room where music is happening live, with someone beside you. From background noise to the thing itself.

3 practices: The Mood Navigator, Deep Listening, Go Hear It Live. About the art →

5

🕐 History

The past as a wellbeing resource: bank treasured memories with the laboratory’s own deliberate-nostalgia protocol, send today’s worries travelling through time to find their true size, and rescue your family’s stories before they go quiet.

3 practices: The Memory Bank, The Long View, The Family Story. About the art →

6

🎭 Theatre & Performance

Playfulness, courage and presence: two-minute improv games shown in randomized experiments to grow comfort with uncertainty, a piece learned by heart and performed, and a seat at live theatre — where experiments show the live-ness itself does work no screen can.

3 practices: The Yes-And Gym, Take the Stage, Go See It Live. About the art →

7

🎥 Film & Media

Watching films the way readers read books: the watch-and-discuss practice that halved divorce rates in a randomized trial, the elevation hunt that turns inspiring clips into kind acts, and the deliberately meaningful watchlist.

3 practices: Watch & Talk, The Elevation Hunt, The Meaningful Watchlist. About the art →

8

🕊 Sacred Arts

The arts every tradition engineered for transcendence, open to every belief and none: shared gatherings that produce collective effervescence, contemplative slow looking with sacred masterworks, and the architecture of awe in vast interiors.

3 practices: The Gathering, Sacred Slow Looking, The Vast Interior. About the art →

Honest about its size

What it will and will not promise.

It will

  • give you short, guided practices, each built on a named study and graded for how strong that study is
  • teach engagement as a skill: how you look, listen and reflect shapes what the arts give you
  • work for beginners and lifelong lovers alike; nothing is graded, ever
  • show you where to find the arts free, from open museum collections to free full performances

It will not

  • treat depression, anxiety or any condition: these are wellbeing practices, not therapy
  • claim that passive listening makes you cleverer: there is no “Mozart effect”
  • claim the arts beat every other engaging pastime: that question is still open
  • borrow other fields’ results and present them as its own
